Only 15 km south of Heraklion, one can find the region with the largest number of wineries in Crete, which also happen to be the most famous ones. Come with us to visit the villages of Dafnes, Siva, Avgeniki, Kerasia, and Venerato, as well as the Holy Monastery of Paliani, the oldest monastery on the island. Our goal is to combine great company, fun, and cycling with tasting quality Cretan wines, most of which are highly ranked in the world rankings.

Our means of transport will be the electric bicycle, an alternative innovative and environmentally-friendly vehicle, which gives us the opportunity to move quietly, tirelessly, and quickly from one village to the next and from one winery to the other, taking roads with minimal car traffic. Our electric mountain bikes are made by the German company HAIBIKE; they have 10 gears and hydraulic disc brakes, and offer maximum safety while riding.

Our goal is to make the high-quality bottled wines and wine grape varieties of our region known, seeing as so few are aware of them and appreciate them. This aims to help local winemakers promote their products and, at the same time, improve the relationship of our fellow citizens with the (electric) bicycle. Even though the E-bike is very popular in the rest of Europe and in some parts of our country as well, it is often forgotten and ignored on our island.

TOUR DESCRIPTION: We will start from the village of Siva, where we will pass by the SILVA DASKALAKI winery. We will then continue south to the village of Kerasia and head for the EFROSINI winery. Next, we will cross Kerasia and pass over the Heraklion - Mires national road to reach the village of Avgeniki. After riding through it, we will head for the IDAIA winery in the village of Venerato. We will then head southeast to the Holy Monastery of Paliani, where we will take a water break. Afterwards, we will return to Venerato, riding along its narrow and picturesque roads to reach the village of Dafnes. At the edge of the village, we will pass by the DAF WINES DOULOUFAKI FERENIKI winery. We will then head back to our starting point, passing by the DOULOUFAKIS winery. We will leave Dafnes and, in 500 meters after that point, our tour will come to an end. On each tour we will visit one of the above mentioned wineries and will enjoy a wine-tasting.

Total tour: duration: 2.5 hours; distance: 15 km
Our small groups consist of 2 to 6 persons and the tour is designed for anyone from 18 to 80 years of age that weighs a maximum of 120 kg. The electric bikes help push us uphill and ensure a very comfortable ride. The actual riding duration is 1 hour. However, the reason why the tour ends up being 2.5 hours long is because an extra half hour is added in order to visit the monastery, as well as another hour dedicated to wine-tasting, which will take place in each one of the wineries mentioned above. The winemakers will offer us a variety of wines to try. |

ITALIAN CUISINE AT BLUE KIPOS 67

This tour is exactly the same as the previous one, with the difference being that, in the end, there is no wine-tasting. Instead, we end up at Blue Kipos 67, where Silvia and Alessandro will be waiting for us. They will have cooked and set the table for us in their wonderful house, which has a fantastic view to the hills of the Monastery of Paliani.

Their house is a 500-year-old mansion, built by Venetian nobles as a vacation home. Now it is the home of Silvia, a native of Palermo, Sicily, and Alessandro from Milan. They have managed to combine two different Italian cuisines with the result being deliciously explosive. They only cook for a small number of people, seeing as their table can accommodate from 2 to 6 guests. It is a unique and very exclusive experience for people who are looking for something different.
